I totally agree!! i have a very ethnic weird name- Mar- see- a with the pronounciation on the a at the end- it's portuguese- everyone called me Marsha all my life- i just hate it!!
y'all should go back to regular simple names!! like Mike and John... stuff like that ... sorry but it's really hard on a kid....
of course, I guess by the time all these kids get out there they will all have these hard names and there will be no more Mikes and johns and Susans and Annes etc.
take from me... give the child something easy to spell and to pronounce!

SOmetimes it does make it hard on the kid, but you'd be surprised how many kids with unique names grow up to appreciate being a little different. I must admit some(such a s the Leighsa name you mentioned) are waaaay too strange they don't even look nice. If I was going to make the name Lisa look more unique I would probably just spell it Leesa, so it is different, but yet, not as confusing to try to read and pronounce.

Each person is a unique individual. Sometimes, people don't know how to spell the name in it's more common form and don't want to ask anyone. Others make the name unique with different or odd spellings. They have a right to their opinion of what they name their child, just as you have the right to choose how to spell your own child's name.
Mine is very unique and it was never "hard" on me.
Only my opinion, but there are far more greater things out there to be concerned about like healthcare, global climate change, and jobs for those that need them.

I agree with you, it seems like parents want their children to stand out from the others. But not only does it make it hard on the kids but also the teachers, could u imagine having to go thru a roster of names today and figure out how to pronounce them?? I named my son Ian and although i thought that was a known name you wouldnt believe how people mis pronounce it and i wish i would have picked another name.
Anyway I feel your pain the kids @ my sons school have names that i cant even start to figure out. I feel bad for them having to correct people constantly with the correct pronunciation and spelling. I personally think if parents just thought it thru prior to naming their kids they'd change their minds

My theory is that is has more to do with the parents trying to outdo each other with "cool" names rather than worry about what the kids are going to go through as they get older. Believe me I have had to spell my name all of my life to people because I don't have a basic name that cannot be misinterpreted.

This is my pet peeve...it drives me crazy. Some parents seem to think that some wacky spelling makes them "creative". They aren't creative enough to think of a unique name, so they think a weird spelling is enough. It's ridiculous.

I am inclined to agree with you. Even though my mom spelled my name awkwardly. My name is Aymee, but most people just want to spell it Amy. Believe me, it gets so old having to spell your name over and over for people. Go with the simplest form of spellings for names if you ask me.

that is very true ppl have odd names in my childs too like slavisa or ljubica but i think the personal child will get used to it but if the other children have to write sumthing or do valentines that would be hard on them bc once my daughter told me that a guy spelled sum1's name target instead of jered (which is actually pretty funny) and ppl laughed at him even tho jered is not that hard :P
soz if i didn't help

We picked a different name for our child: Elysia (means sweetly blissful). But our reasoning was that we both had such common names (I had FOUR people in my graduation class with my name, and TWO of them had my middle initial, ONE had my last initial) that we wanted something a bit different. She goes by Lysi (prono Lissy) though, and I've had many people actually say they LIKED her name.

Everyone strives to stand out, be different.
This is just an example of a lame attempt to do so.
