Before Admiral Dewey took command, he was instructed by his predecessor that he was to sail to the Philippines and take it by force. America did this in an attempt to become a global, imperialistic power. When Spain lost Cuba a month later this pretty much ended the Spanish Empire because by the time peace negotiations in Paris ended, the US had obtained Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines.

For the Spanish, they said they colonize the Philippines for these three G's: God, Gold and Glory. For the Americans, I think it was for an expansion of territory. Because the Philippines is a small country, they had the chance to take over it.
