I'm guessing by "alcove" that you mean you have a toilet next to the vanity with a wall or tub on the opposite side of the toilet. If so, then the norm is 32 - 36 inches total space for the toilet. Ideally, you would want to have the toilet centered between the vanity and the wall/tub/shower on the other side of it. Also - most toilets are about 18 inches wide, so you will want to try to leave at least nine inches between the toilet and the vanity. E-mail me if you want a detailed plan of what I'm talking about.

Old building codes allowed 12" from center of toilet to the nearest edge of the vanity. Current building codes now require 18".
