It's a blue tick coon hound named Smokey and since 1953 they have all been of the same lineage. The original Smokey was owned by Rev. Bill Brooks and was chosen by the UT students at a UT vs. Miss. State game. When "Blue Smokey" was up for voting and his name was called he howled. The students cheered and he howled louder. The students went nuts over the dog and he was voted as their mascot. To this day, Smokey leads the Vols out of the "T" prior to each home game.

List of Dogs representing UT:

Smokey 1953-1954
Smokey II 1955-1964
Smokey III 1965-1977
Smokey IV 1978-1979
Smokey V 1980-1983
Smokey VI 1984-1991
Smokey VII 1992-1994
Smokey VIII 1995-2003
Smokey IX 2004-Present

I have to admit though, being a Kentucky fan I loved this little tidbit when I read it: "The dogs have led exciting lives. Smokey II was dognapped by Kentucky students in 1955 and later survived a confrontation with the Baylor Bear at the 1957 Sugar Bowl."

Hahahhaha. GO BIG BLUE!!!

Blue tick hound is the correct answer. The "other" mascot is a guy in a coon-skin hat with an old fashioned rifle (a Volunteer) Both can usually be seen on the sidelines at UT games.

Smokey
(Blue tick hound), University of Tennessee.
In 1953, a student poll revealed a desire to select a live mascot. The
Tennessee Pep Club held a contest in 1953 to select a coonhound, a
native breed of the state, as the mascot to represent the school.
Announcements of the contest in local newspapers read, “This can’t be an
ordinary hound. He must be a ‘Houn’ Dog’ in the best sense of the word.”
