I think teaching is a noble profession that is being destroyed as the government systematically tears apart the education system with the end all goal of dumbing down people.
My daughter considered going into teaching Math but I discouraged her. It is an antsy profession in my area. Teachers are not paid well and stability is disappearing. Thank goodness she has branched into Computer programming and maths.
I have always had wonderful feelings for teachers, except of course when I was in school!
I had my kids in an alternative school that welcomed family participation and got to know the staff very well. I ended up working as an aide and yard attendant for many years. I found all the teachers in our school to be wonderful caring creative people devoted to their children. But then, the rep of the school had teachers begging to get in. 85% of the teachers there retire, not leave mid career. Now, the parents were not nearly so easy at times! They are very challenging for teachers at times, much more so than the children.
We also did mixed classes so that kids stayed with the same teacher for 2 years, This way the curriculum was rotated every year so that no one got the same stuff twice. Each child got to have 1 year of being a little one and 1 year of helping the younger ones. I loved many of the teachers very much.
I was a single parent and we found family in the school. It was that kind of institution. I can truly say that the teachers my children had inspired them to reach the heights they are reaching. Not too many single parents on welfare can say their children are receiving scholarships for their Masters. It is because they had good teachers (and a Mom with expectations).
I wish you well. It is a worthy occupation but you will never have much extra $$. And you work hard long hours. Teachers here are overworked You do not get the respect you deserve for all of this. So, unless you are very very strong and committed, I would consider this carefully.
Good luck.

I am a first year teacher, I didn't get into it thinking that I was going to get rich. I do it because I truly love the kids. It's hard. You have to deal with 20+ different personalities in your classroom, plus all of the parents who think their children are perfect and can do no wrong. There is tons of paperwork, meetings, extra duties, etc. Tomorrow I will be at school for over 12 hours because of morning duties, then we have a science fair until about 8:00 pm. But, there are kids out there who make everything worth it. My entire class had an AH-HA moment today when we were teaching multiplying with a factor of 4. It felt wonderful.
As a teacher, you can expect to be a teacher, disciplinarian, parent, counselor and everything in between. But, like I said, there are moments when it is all worth it.

I think junior highs/ middle schools should be eradicated. Children 11-13 years of age aren't mature enough for that transition, and it causes problems through high school. Those pre-teens would benefit from being kept a while longer in an elementary setting with more nurturing teachers because they're already going through a lot as far as their physical and emotional health and growth are concerned.
Teachers are also extremely underpaid. I don't care for the fact that celebrities are paid millions of dollars a year, yet the people who watch and take care of our children all day struggle to get by.

Teachers are underpaid. They are the future for our kids, but they are dirt poor because people don't appreciate them enough.
I would definitely choose teaching as a profession, IF the salary went up. You better love teaching and the kids, because you'll spend lots of sleepless nights grading papers and have to deal with those thick-skulled kids.

Teaching can be a rewarding profession but you have to be ready to put up with a LOT of crap from parents, students, and administrators. I also think public school teachers complain too much about being "underpaid"... compared to teachers who work in parochial and Christian schools they make higher pay, have less non instructional duties, and get reimbursed for taking on extra tasks (like after school clubs, committees, or extracurricular performing groups).

I am a third year teacher and I will not teach until retirement. I did not expect to have great pay, but I didn't understand how much money I would actually need to stay afloat. I have quickly learned! If you like having a little money in your pocket for things like...oh I don't know...groceries. Choose another path. I will. I love my children but come on.

Sorry, I do teach and you will never make any money, you'd better love kids ,and the paperwork is totally overwhelming not to mention the hundreds of other mundane tasks that have nothing to do with teaching.
