Douglas Lincoln debates. Lincoln fought to preserve the nation, not abolish slavery? I am still reading the seven debates. Any insite would be appreciated... I guess I did not pay attention in history class.

Douglas was all over him saying that he was an abolitionist and that he was going to give the slaves the same rights as the whites which was never Lincoln view yes he hated slavery and thought it should end and called it the most evil thing there was. but he never said that he would give them the same freedoms as a white Lincoln also knew that if he didn't clear the air on this that he would stand no chance of winning since no whites believed that a black man was just as good as a white man so this is why he called Douglas out on this matter
