I know what an autopsy is but I've been watching Animal Planet's Animal Cops and everytime they retrieve a dead animal, they preform a necropsy. What's the difference between an Autopsy and a Necropsy?

My understanding is that an autopsy is performed on people and necropsy is performed on animals. It is from a greek word that means "seeing a dead body".

Really I dont think there is a difference. I think they just call it a necropsy because it is not a human. I think it just makes it easier for people to distinguish between whether it is a human or an animal. But that is just my guess. I think we called it autopsy at our clinic but who knows?

necropsy is basically the same thing as autopsy

Definition: 1.the examination of a body after death; autopsy.

The term "autopsy" derives from the Greek for "to see for oneself". "Necropsy" is from the Greek for "seeing a dead body".
