Trust me, everyone has experienced stress or some form of nervousness when playing for people at some point of their life. Some are very good at hiding it, and some stop feeling nervous after many times of performing. There are, however, a number of things you can do to relieve this stress.

1. Eat bananas before the audition. Don't know the truth of the, but it is often said that bananas contain some ingredient that helps calm the nerves.

2. Play on every occasion you get. Play for friends, play for family, play for imaginary audiences. Get used to the rush of adrenaline and love it.

3. When you do audition, don't start thinking, "Oh dear, what if i mess up this hard run or this difficult passage." Instead think, "Hey, I feel prepared, and I'm going to rock." Pinchas Zukerman, concert violinist, was once described during an audition as "he almost dared you not to like his playing." ;) This feeling helps.

4. Music isn't about yourself. It's about the audience. The judges are the audience. They are on your side and they want you to succeed. So play for them. Don't just think of yourself.

5. Before you play, shake your hands and loosen them up. Warm-up with a simple G major scale. Don't play your auditioning piece.

I think you should go with what your heart wants. Technically speaking , it is easier to pick up fast on the cello because it is physically less tiring to play for beginners than those for the violin since holding an instrument on the shoulder is a very unnatural position.

Don't run from that sort of stress. Embrace it, realize it for what it is, formulate a plan to deal with or overcome it, and then just do it.

whenever i would audition (or even take a test) i would just pretend that i was just playing as if i was practicing at home. you forget that there is someone watching you and you will feel better.
