It does seem strange that he will not tell you what the new job is....unless he has always kept things from you. I would have someone fallow him...see what he is doing.

I would suggest that you try and follow him with the help of a friend who does not know him and see where he goes. Then things might seem more clear from there on. Hiring a private detective may be an expensive affair. I am not too much in favor of that as I feel it is too intrusive.
Please do not stress over it, if you are unsuccessful in finding out, talk to him and tell him that if he does not disclose what is happening, then you may have to approach the police for your safety .
I was just wondering "gigs" may be a shortform for "gigolo's"??

I don't know of many jobs that bring home $100 bills and keep nocurnal hours, and the ones I do know of don't require an office, hint hint.

Ask him where this " new office " is located?
Be careful..lots of cash could mean drugs...
keep your eyes open and check out the pockets in his coats and look in drawers for information. Check out his eyes when he returns.. If you discover he is...check out fast and get a lawyer ..take the evidence with you to the lawyer..

I'm not for snooping ... but this sounds like an exception. Get an investigator. This situation doesn't pass the "smell test".
