I have lots of favorites, but if you want to branch out, try Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto fistfight in Heaven. It's a collection of short stories and I laughed through some, and fought back tears through others. The story "This is What is Means When We Say Phoenix, Arizona" was made into the screenplay for the movie Smoke Signals.

Oh, you like Hemmingway? Are his stories good? I bought the book "For whom the bell tolls" but I never opened it....thought it would be boring.
Hmmm, my favorite author is Jane Austen (inspired me to become a writer), Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (the first book I ever took the time to read more than once), George Elliot (sp?), Charles Dickens, Georgette Heyer, Edith Wharton, Emily Bronte, Virginia woolfe
Contemporary writer: Lisa Kelypas (she only writes those harlequin sorta books, but she's the only contemporary historical romance writer I feel that I could waste my precious time reading.)

I'm pleased that I get to be the first to say "J.D. Salinger."
I also enjoy works by Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Jack Kerouac, Joseph Heller and the songwriters Dan K. and Paul B. from Interpol.
