This is a HUGE problem. I sometimes get scared to go to school just because I know that I will probably get called on to read out loud. It is so strage though because I am not a shy person at all but when it comes to reading my hearts starts pounding so fast, I start shaking, my eyes begin to water, and when I first start to speak my voice is crackling and I sound like I am going to cry or something. I am in my 10th year of high school and this has never been a problem throughout my 10 years of school untill now. What can I do? Please Help!!

The best and easiest thing to do is to talk to your English teacher and tell him or her about your problem. There are also some public speaking groups that may help you with some calming techniques when speaking or reading aloud. Your guidance counselor would be a good source to find out about that sort of information.

Could this be the voice change that a man gets at about your age, when the chords in the throat change and for a few months there is crackling and 'breaking'. Ask the teacher to avoid calling on you if possible - do this away from the other students and explain that it is because your voice is 'breaking'.

Normal for a young man.

Or just maybe there really is a voice problem that a doctor should look into. Talkl to your parents too. Good luck.

Don't worry. Worrying ahead of time can make you more nervous when the event actually occurs. Also, if you think you might be called on, read the material to yourself beforehand whenever possible. This will help prevent you from making mistakes or pronouncing something wrong. Finally, take your time. If you speed through it, it will draw more attention to yourself. Merely read at a normal speed. Furthermore, if you think your voice is about to crack, clear your voice. Don't be afraid to do this whenever necessary. Hope this helps!!
