Described as a song about "a post-relationship catharsis that head-dives from an otherworldly intro into a hard-driving thrash of hard rock guitars and soaring rock vocals"
Amy's description of the song:
"It's the one song on The Open Door that's about the same abusive relationship which was the source of all the songs on Fallen. It was appropriate to put this song at the beginning, but it comes from a much stronger standpoint than Fallen. It's not saying, 'I'm trapped in fear and somebody save me.' It's saying, 'Fear is only in our minds ... I'm not afraid anymore.'"

No she is not. She is talking about escaping to a world where nothing is the same. where she can live er life how she wants it lived, and in her mind erase the life she is in. It brings out hurt and pain she has felt in her life, and how she wishes she could take it away, and erase it. "i sleep to die, erase the silence, erase my life" she is saying that she dreams of knowing what her life would be like if she was nothing. if she didnt exist. trust me, i write songs myself. and those lyrics speak powerfully

Along with Haunted and Going Under from the previous album "Fallen", this is a song about abuse. Amy Lee has said that it's not saying "I'm trapped in fear someone come help me." It's saying "Fear is only in our minds / I'm not afraid anymore."

She's obviously a very deep and emotionally tormented artist. She's a pioneer, who would have thought to write a song about being in pain. Truly outstanding and novel.

Not too sure what this song is about, but I think its about Ben. How Amy is saying that she doesnt need him anymore and wont be chained down to express her thoughts, feelings, etc.

maybe not suicide, but definately a desire to escape this world...i think it's more metaphorical than literal
