Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and launch the task Manager. Select the processes tab, then click on the Image Name column title to sort the processes alphabetically. Look for a task or task(s) named 'dumprep'. If it's there - kill it.... Also go to www.sysinternals.com and get a copy of pagdefrg and check to see if pagefile.sys is heavily fragemented. If so, use pagedfrg to defragment it. Also defragment the hard drive c:\. That should take care of the problem...

Scan for viruses (AVG is free download)
Scan for adware (Adaware is free download)
Scan for spyware (Spybot is free download)
Delete temp files (Start, Run, type %temp%, delete everything that you see)
IE, Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies, Delete Files and Offline Files.
Beyond all of the above it's time to look at what you have running in the background (Every program that you install thinks it should be running from Startup to Shutdown, all the while sucking up resources) Find em and kill em. Spybot has a startup tool that can help with this (Mode Advanced, Tools, System Startup).
Good Luck

download and run spybot-search and destroy. also winstartup manager to see what progs are loaded. clean your cookies folder and run your antivirus if you have one if not, get one quick. defragment your hard-drive, use the clean up your hard drive option too. uninstall progs you don't use. the list is endless of things you can do to speed things up, there is advanced stuff like tweaking the registry, i did a couple and noticed an instant improvement in application execution.
check out pc mags and xp websites for more info.

need more details mate:
hardware issues? what's your system spec? (list all installed hardware)
What anti virus/Firewall you using? let me guess... norton? if so get rid of it - they tell you in pc world it's the best, because they can only sell it to people who don't know much about computers... Norton uses vast amounts of system resources, slowing down your system a lot, and it misses more threats than it catches. There's better software for free (AVG Free for one), but if you want the best of the best, I'd have to reccomend using Kaspersky internet security - it does everything, and it does it well
If it's not your antivirus or firewall, and it's not hardware, maybe you got loads of malware????

Are you running a modern version of Norton security suite? I have found that grinds many pcs / laptops to a halt.

sounds like something is eating up memory and running in the background... OR you have too much crap on your computer and the hard drive may be close to full... OR you have too many programs open at the same time...
