Last night I plugged my vacuum cleaner into the wall in my bedroom. All of a sudden the all of the lights on that side of the room, plus the spare room, went out. I only had 1 light working on that circuit when I plugged it in, so I cant think I overloaded anything. But, I checked the circuit breaker and everything in it is the "on" position. Any suggestions, or should I just sell my soul to pay for an electrician?

Why argue with the will of the God's? Perhaps it was Their way of telling You that Housework is bad, and that You are never to clean Your room ever again? Why run the risk of Their wrath. Get Your Mother to do it for You. That way the worst that can happen is that She will be struck by lightning rather than You.

Check the first two answers first. Then look at the outlet you last plugged into. Look for smoke residue on the outlet or cover. You might have a short right at the plug and need to replace it or retighten the wires. They could just be loose. If they are just inserted into the back of the outllet, try using the side screws for a more thorough connection.. The fact the vacuum blew everything makes sense for a overload. However if that happened there would not be anything working on that circuit.

That would happen to me all of the time. I could only blowdry my hair in the kitchen because it would blow out the power in half the house elsewhere.
You will probably want to get your outlets updated to grounded outlets that are GFCI 3-prong. Much safer too. Call a few electricians and ask them what they charge per outlet and if they would give you a discount to do the whole house.
I had about 14 outlets redone for I think $340.00. This was a good deal in my opinion because if I ever go to sell the house it is money well spent.
Good luck

The other answerer's are correct.

Sometimes it looks like the breaker switch is in the "ON" position but, once you trip a circuit, you need to simply move the switch all the way over in the "OFF" position and then back to "ON" until it clicks in the ON position.

The outlet is in line and it has gone bad when you plugged in the vac. Same thing just happened here. Replace the outlet and problem solved. Its like a line of Christmas lights and one goes out and all the ones after it go out also.

i can't believe that no one else suggested this, but....

you should check to see if the outlet is a GFI, but if there is a GFI anywhere on the circuit that is out (such as in the bathroom nearby), that could still be the problem. i have blown a GFI in another room before, and it can be pesky to find. good luck.

Try this. Trun all the breakers off. then in turn turn tem back on again, you may have a tripped breaker that dosen't look like its tripped.

try resetting the breakers by turning them to the off position and they back on just to be sure it didn't trip, sometimes they tripped and just don't look like they did.

flip the breakers Off-on and see if that fixes it.
