I have read a couple of studies that say it is a statistical probablity but I haven't heard of anyone making an explaination of the mechanism behind it.

The studies that I saw seemed well controled and seemed to say that in some cases people received information about a future event before it happened. It didn't find anyone who could do it on command, or concously control it. There was a more recent study that talked about how animals seem to know when thier owners are about to return home. Video camera's were placed in peoples homes, and the people were asked to come and go at irregular times. Some pets, mostly dogs would always get excited and their activity level would increase greatly a few minutes before their owners returned even when it was not a regular time.
Remember that modern physics has shown that cause and effect are only ususaly true. Don't let that suck you into the "create your own reality", no study that I have seen says you can concously control these things.
