It is an expression of anger. It can be used for anything cars too.

I think you answered your own question. It is a valid point though. About 20 years ago I sat down with a couple of friends and we decided which vulgarities were reserved for members of which gender. The list has changed over the years, 20 years ago no one would have ever called I guy a "b...." but I hear them do it now. The son of... does kind of stick that one on a male though.

I don't really think it matters, if you really want to say daughter of a, but since no one uses it, it may sound pretty silly. However more power to you for being out of the ordinary. You may be better off calling them something entirely different, If that doesn't sound right.

Yes the phrase can be used for females as well because it is a figure of speech.

I think if you use it as one word it can be applied to both, although it is not technically correct. You can also use it to insult a woman if you call "her son" it (so use indirectly).

You could use either, but it would sounds stupid, though both have the potential to get you slapped equally as hard.
