alright, so my car is a piece of dookie and i'll proudly admit that...because most first cars are. but why would my 93 dodge shadow be having this odd problem? without them on, it cranks once or twice and "dies out" and all the interior lights die, but when i turn the headlights on, blam! it starts like it is brand new. i dont get it.

i forgot to mention that the problem only started a couple days ago...so i'm guessing its a bad battery.

You didn't mention if the car always did it or if it just started doing it. I suspect a dirty connection at the battery or low water IN the battery.
Remove the battery cables and clean the cables and the posts on the battery.
There is a nifty little tool made just for that. It has a wire brush built in to it.
Pop open the caps on top of the batery and add DISTILLED water if low.
Reconnect the cables and run the engine.
If that doesn't fix it it could be someone who owned it before you connected wiring for a security alarm or a sound system and got wire mixed up.

It is either because of wiring problems or the battery being weak or both. The wiring to the ignition system is having poor contact, so it doesn't start well. And only when you turn on the headlight, the wiring from the headlight sometime affect the ignition system, and it work better. The battery may also be weak and need to be topped up or changed.

Not good in the long run cos the battery is weaken everytime you start/crank. Get a mechanic to check.

have the charging system checked at auto part store.I think its a battery. my grandpa showed me a trick a long time ago and it works most of the time----when your car doesnt turn over in the cold turn on your headlights count to 3 and start it this warmes the battery just enough to start it but you only have one shot at it. sounds like the problem you have. I wonder if thats why new cars have driving lights that light up when the key is turned on
