if the hard disk is making a lot of noise then it is possible that it is failing. But some hard disk are just noisy. If your storing a lot of information then it could be that your hard disk has gotten fragmented. So try running a disk defragment from the system tools on the accessories menu. The hard disk may also have some bad sectors, to fix these or identify them you need to run a chkdsk.....this is a base command so from the Run prompt type CMD then in the window that opens type chkdsk. It won't run the chkdsk at this point but should acknowledge the command. type exit and then shut down and reboot. It should run the chkdsk and you can watch for bad sectors, if it finds some it should mark then and that might fix your problem.

Good Luck

Try defragmenting it. Go to your control panel, and I'm not quite sure how to get there at the moment because I'm on a work computer and it won't let me do it, but you can find it from there. It takes a little bit, but what it does is rearrange how you store things. Because when things get stored, it gets placed randomly. So when your computer looks for things, it's slow because it's essentially stopping and going between the empty spaces and the used ones. Defragmenting it will put most of the used space together, therefore reducing any obstruction. You might have to do it a couple of times.

it could be any number of things, you sound like u know what u are talking about. but just in case. it sounds like a virus to me even though u say its not . clean out you cash (temp Internet files and cookies)defrag, run scan with Norton. u say you have 300 gigs what % is left.if its under %10 could be your problem. i would first try a different hard drive because of the sound you heard. check property's on my computer and make sure all your ram shows up as a last resort before u go out and buy hardware format your hard drive a destructive recovery wipe it out if none of this works u probably burned up your motherboard or processor.

Hi. Computers slow down when they are doing many things at once. Press "Ctrl and Alt and Delete". This will bring up the task manager. Click the "Processes" tab, then the CPU column header twice. This will show what is taking up the most CPU cycles. If you do not know what is running, Google it. Stop the unnecessary ones one at a time.
