i own a repair shop, and there's really no way to tell without tearing it down and checking everything in it,you basically are taking there word for the engine being good,i have bought a lot of used engines before, and i have gotten some bad ones before, salvage yards or junk yards will sometimes stretch the truth a little to sell an engine, what it is some cars they buy wrecked, they cant start the engines, and hear them run,so thy gamble on them, and then you gamble on them telling the truth about them, they will always give you another engine when one is bad, but the labor your out changing them isn't paid for ,so you loose on it that way,but really your going to be taking there word that's its good ,i hope this help,s. good luck.

Do a compression test and a leak down. This will give you a good idea of what it going on inside the engine.

the best you can hope for is spark plug,s with some mile,s on them......they can tell you a story........pick up a champion spark plug catalog .....they show picture,s of various plug,s & the condition,s they opperiated under........they can tell you if it,s an oil burner,or if it had been runing hot,or too lean,etc.........available at most automotive retailer,s.
