Why does everyone think that they write poetry that is exceptional and deep, when in actuality it's always quite pedestrian and trite?

Very few people who write what they call poetry actually read poetry. Therefore, they don't really know what poetry is. Most think poetry is a transcription of strong personal emotions on paper (or performed, as in spoken word poetry). However, poetry, like any art form, requires a great deal of knowledge and skill gained through reading, imitation, practice and the development of personal style. If people read more poetry, they might learn what it is and what it is not, and, god save us all, realize how bad their own is and keep it to themselves.

It's just fun to think you can do something. After being rejected many times or being forced to write poetry, you start to get these strange feelings. Different people relate to different things, and their poetry is as deep as they think they can go.

I think it's because they think it's cool, and it makes them all deep and dark. Perhaps they don't have enough exposure to real poetry, only they're friends scribblings which they want to how off to impress other kids. I have lots of friends like that. It hard to tell them that I like it, which I most definitely don't, but tell them I do anyway, because I don't want to hurt they're feelings.
P.S This may offend you, but it's usually emo, goth, or silly girly girls who write the horrid stuff.

because poetry is a way of self expression, its sharing with the world your veiwpoint. maybe you are critical of this artform because you are judgemental, and refuse to open yourself to anothers point of veiw
