It varies from type to type with each species but here's a partial list to start from.

Perennials (flowers which reterun year after year): Astilbe, Daylily, Hosta, Lungwort, Fern, Epimedium, Bleeding Heart, Corydalis

Shrubs: Viburnum, Dogwood, Summersweet, Rhododendron, Holly, Hemlock, Enkianthus

Hosta is an excellent plant for a shady area, also Caladium is good and Verbena is a good one also! And there is a plant called Elephants Ears that LOVES shade but it needs to be dug up every fall and stored away-but you can re-plant it the next year, if you want to go to the trouble!

ok if you are wonting something that dosent require working a lot they are right the hosta will have to be dug up every 2 years and seperated because they get so big they will choke out the small ones as for hydrangies they will not bloom without sun
