A linking verb "links" the subject to something in the predicate.
David Duchovny is an actor. "Is" is the linking verb because it is linking the subject (DD) to the predicate nominative (actor). A helping verb is part of a verb phrase. Some examples are the following: is running, are working, was helping, were going. The helping verb (also called auxiliary verb) helps the main verb make its point. In your sentence are is the linking verb. A lot of people have said with is a helping verb. It's not. It's a preposition.

Helping verbs are verbs that are used in a verb phrase (meaning, used with a second verb) to show tense, or form a question or a negative. Helping verbs are used to show the perfect verb tenses, continuous/progressive verb tenses, and passive voice. Helping verbs are always followed by a second verb.
being verbs are verbs that state that something IS.

Here a a couple of things to remember:

* State-of-being verbs can be the main verb of the sentence; as in: Sally is my best friend. Or a state-of-being verb can be used as a helping verb; as in: She is going on a vacation. Note that the verbs: be, being, and been always NEED a helping verb; as in: Pat has been sick all week.
* State of being verbs are often called linking verbs because they link the subject of the sentence with information about it
There are 8 state of being verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been.

'Helping verbs' work with the main verb to give you a better idea of when the action takes place.

For instance: the action will take place in the future:

will is helping out the verb take. It "will take" place: this speaks of the future.

Another example is ......... It "shall take" place. OR It "has taken" place.

Helping verbs simple help out the main verb

Linking verbs connect the subject to additional information about the subject.

For examples:
I am a singer...ask yourself who is a singer.
The math problem is very hard. ... ask yourself what is hard

If you can answer the question with a subject, you have your linking verb
