most people are quick to say russia but what did russia do to have a greater part in the war? they did what they always did historically, the retreated and made hitler make the same mistake that napolean did. the german army had to march through russia during the winter months so when they finally fought they were weak/tired.
The real answer is neither side would have one without the others help. With the US in the east and Russia in the west it made it a two front war for hitlers army. by doing this it split the german army in half. yes russia got to berlin first but the americans were right on their heels. Also russia waited until VE to even declare war on Japan. it's a coin toss which took the greater part

Russia

1) Russia suffered massive casualties, both military and civilian, when compared to the other Allied powers (British Empire, US)

2) D-Day may be more celebrated but the Battle of Stalingrad was the bloodiest and most decisive battle of WW2, the German's defeat in Russia marked the beginning of the end

3) The war in the East was the BIG war, with far more troops devoted to it than the Western war on the part of Germany

The Russians won through sheer mass.
The sucked precious German resources from the West into the Eastern front.
German forces facing the Americans and British in the West were mainly recalled from the East and refitting when d Day happened but gave a good fight soldier for soldier, tank for tank but the Allies had overwhelming superior airpower that tip the balance.
The Russains took the best fight but history will not recognise that since the books and education is from the 'free' world and not the communist side.

Everybody took credit for the win, including France.
And The Russians got to Berlin first, because the western allies didn't want the bloodbath with their troops.
The Russians lost 100,000 man just with that battle.
Of course Stalin by himself had 20 Million Russians killed, so that was no big deal (to him).
Without the massive amounts of materials supplied to Russia by the USA, the Russians would have been in big doo doo.

As far as Europe was concerned, Russia regained lost territory and went into Poland and Germany as far as Berlin, all with some major causalies.
In the Pacific, they helped to liberate some Chinese cities and attacked a few Japanese possessions, all just before the end of the war.
The US with the help of primarily the British, went from Northern Africa thru Italy to just outside Berlin. Shipped tons of material to the Russians.Fought most of the major campaigns in Europe.
In the Pacific theater whipped Japan to a standstill.
So, I would say the USA did the majority of the fighting.

Well, I'm American... and as brave and heroic as our forces were in Europe, it was the Red Army that beat down Germany.
If germany could have focused on just 1 front (russia) they MAY have been able to beat russia; however, the thorn in their side that was Great Britian and ultimately the 'second front' that was opened in France siphoned troops to the West who would have fought Russia.

Russia pretty much defeated Hitlers Germany, America took care of Japan and Italy and D-day finished a already severely weakened Germany.

Russia mainly fought the borders of their massive land. The Germans hated to confront these fierce warriors. They were
excellent marksmen;and had great leadership. While the USA,fought
all over the globe. The Japanese thought we were done at Pearl Harbor. Gen. Patten was right when he said" We SHOULD NOT STOP IN GERMANY; GO RIGHT THRU TO RUSSIA; AND ILIMINATE THOSE DIRTY COMMIE BASTARDS".

Russia lost 10,000 dead (on average)every day of the war. Think about that. Day after day for 3 + years.

It was probably Hitler's horrible stubbornness and poor military decisions in general that lost him the war. When it comes to the war in Europe, GB wouldn't have survived too much longer if the U.S. hadn't intervened. If GB would have fell, the War may have had a different outcome. So I say U.S.
