Newport is in Orange County and has everything California...shopping, restaurants, beaches...
Depending on what part, it can be very ritzy (close to the water) or middle-class (well, California middle class).

Yes, Newport has a lot of shopping. Everything is a bit pricey, but plenty to buy.
Fashion Island is in Newport and South Coast Plaza is nearby in Costa Mesa.
You should be able to do lots of shopping.
