In the story Lyddie why does Lyddie give Ezekial Abernathy calf money?

Please read the text. Ezekiel cannot travel far enough to be safe, or survive in the short term if he has no money, because he will have to remain in hiding for a while because he might be turned in as a runaway slave.

Lyddie decides she needs the money less than Ezekiel does, for the above reasons. She can find work, and move around freely, she is independent. Ezekiel cannot.
