Have you actually read the book? Both this question and the other one you asked are quite easily answered from the text.

If you really are confused, just think about it for a minute--Ezekiel was a black man, a slave who had run away. Of course he had to hide! He didn't want to be turned in for a reward. Basically he would have had to travel further away from the border between the Confederate States and the North in order to be safe, if that makes sense.

Hope this helps. Please do read the book though if this is for an assignment. It is interesting and well written; Katherine Paterson is one of the best YA writers around in the United States.
