when useing sandpaper on wood, is it best to go with the grain or not?

I had a business of ethnic art painting on wood and had to sand thousands of large and small items over the years and never ever do you sand against the grain! If you do and find out how it messed the wood up,you cannot in anyway correct it,least not that I found. Be sure and used the proper sandpaper or sanding blocks and wipe with a tac cloth if possible. That gets every bit of the grain dust off if you are going to use paint,laquer,etc That is a mark of good craftsmanshhip. To spend time on an item, make it your best work.

you have to go with the grai, if you go across it, you'll scratch the wood and potentially ruin your project
