Just got through watching Troy - you know Brad Pitt etc., etc., and the whole point about Achilles - was that when Achilles was born Thetis (his Mum) tried to make him immortal by dipping him in the river Styx. However, she forgot to wet the heel she held him by, leaving him vulnerable at that spot and hence we now know the saying 'achillies heel' etc., but in the film they neglect to show his Mum dunking him in the river and at the end of the film when he gets shot through the heel with an arrow along with about three other arrows to his stomach - the whole 'immortal' bit gets lots and it looks like he's died from his wounds to the stomach !
And that's a myth.

How about the Enigma machine that was taken from a german UBoat in the last war - in a recent American film it was shown that US troops did the daring commando raid - but it was infact British commandos - and that is fact not myth !

Isn't about time these damn yanks started telling things straight for a change ?

It's only a movie, It's only a movie' It's only a movie.

Directors go for what they think the movie goer wants to see. They rarely go the historic rout. You think you are upser. I met one of the astronaunts that was on the Apollo 13 that Tom Hanks starred in the movie and he was upser because the movie showed them yelling at each other and blaming each other and he said they never did that.

Just look how they have doctors and Nurses react in hospital scenes when a patiant is brought in or flat lines. In real emergence situations they are very calm.

Most of the thing Hollywood focuses on these days is action, because the American audience loves all of that instead of historical documentaries, and bringing in the money means more than the truth to a lot of producers.
I tend to watch foreign films the last few years from Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Europe because I like their storylines and focus on story plots better than anything Hollywood has produced of late. When Hollywood 'remakes' a movie from a foreign orginal, it is never as good, it loses something and they change the entire story line around to deal more with suspence for their audiences. It's no wonder why I like am a big fan of theoriginal Japanese Ring trilogy and Cantonese Infernal Affairs (plus Caterina Va In Citta!)

Well in Achilles the least of the problems is what you mentioned, as everyone knows the story about his heel, so there was no need to include it. The part they got really wrong was that they made his lover his cousin.

* In the film, Menelaus dies long before the Trojan Horse is even thought of. Yet he was supposed to be one of the warriors hiding inside the horse.
* The exact opposite happens with Achilles, who died before the horse, yet the film had him inside. This is probably because the film is mostly focused on Achilles, and they wanted the horse to appear.
* Unlike the film, Paris is felled by Philoctetes through a poisoned arrow and despite Paris' pleas to his old lover Oenone (a wood nymph)to heal him, he succumbs to the poison.

because they dont really read the books or they did but it happend to long ago. and yes we all know about the movie U-571 and how the enigma was really captured by the british but.. thats hollywood for you.. so dont blaim everything on the americans blaim the people who make the films...

and who really bases their history on movies anyway? i base history on what i read in books or the internet or sometimes from the history channel.. atleast the people who care about history does that... they also pay attention to the things happening around them

also on U-571.... ifyou want to make that movie look more like crap what about the black guy acctualyl doing something on the sub? werent the black people only supposed to be cooks? because the white people thought that blacks couldnt do anything? just saying if you want to ruin the movie even more... plus german U-boats would never even last 300 Meters. and i dont even think they used Meters back then for Depth

calm down, they are movies, not historical documentaries.

the history channel and discovery channel are quite clear on who captured the enigma machine, and whom bought it afterwards.

Troy would not have been near as popular had they gone into the Pagan stories behind it. it is just a movie. and a damn enjoyable one at that.

things in movies can be twisted or added on from the original story so that is can b more interesting... things can b removed or added on so that it won't look like exact copying... facts can also be twisted so that the movie will appeal to the audience more... it also can make it more dramatic in times that weren't in the original story.. its called artistic license i believe
