3-4 defense is a basic defense used by several teams in the NFL. It is composed of three down linemen and four linebackers. It was once on it's way out because since football is seen as a rush first type game teams were using the 4-3. However, it's probably the fatest growing defense nowadays because many teams are upgrading from their old cover 2 schemes (antiquated scheme that has too many holes) and there has been a lot of recent success with the 3-4 (ie Pats, Chargers, Cowboys, etc...). The 3-4 relies on quicker LBs hitting their gaps. Most teams that use the 3-4 have very precise defenses and everyone has their place.
