You should read the article "Why aren't Economists as important as Garbagemen?"

It is somewhat humorous, and makes the point that if all of the economists on the planet disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice............but if all of the garbagemen disappeared tomorrow, suburban America would be a disgusting place in about 2 weeks' time.

There are several aspects and angle and area of focus economics deal with. Economics in general is a study of choices and outcomes. There are also macroeconomics (which deals with the grand scale scheme of things that look from the perspectives of a country's interaction with another).

Then there's the microeconomic aspects that helps us understand behaviour patterns of one's person choices and outcomes.

Then there's the financial aspect, the poverty aspect, income inequality aspect, international relation aspects. I suppose economics is important because it helps us understand those questions better

Because it allows us as individuals to better understand the choices we make. Because economics is the study of deciding what to do with our limited resources to fulfill our wants and needs. So, each choice has options and each option has consequences. This help us realize our choices and consequences to each option.
