Does it Matter?

Who really cares
If you've got blonde hair
Or black or brown or red.
Some people think
If your skin's brown instead of pink
You might as well be dead.
Just because we were born
In different countries and places
In different families and races
Some people don't think we amount to much.
Is that true?
Are you really white?
Your skin is not so different
From so-called "black" skin.
Would you like me any less
If I had slanted eyes and black hair,
if I spoke a different language?
Some people think so.
And would your friends care any less about you
If you were Jewish?
Or Catholic?
Or whatever?
In this life, those things are not important.
Black is not so different from white.

Black as night they called him
Beloved was my name for him
So different from my pale, pale skin
yet inside, so very much the same.
They rolled their eyes as we walked by,
hand in hand, proud to be together.
They took him one starry night,
and broke him as surely as they did my heart.

No other love I ever had,
for no other could compare.
Not even dreams could comfort,
the emptiness that was always there.
I told my nieces that one fine day
the world would come to accept.
That skin is the outside only,
of a fine person within.

I see the way you look at me
With those eyes judging my skin
Questioning my race
Am I black? Hispanic? Native?
All you know is I am NOT white
You knew you wouldn't give me that job
The minute I walked in the door
Why even bother with the questions
Why waste my time
You don't understand what it is like
To be me
With your white skin and blue eyes
Big house, fancy cars
Two-and-a-half kids with dog
You stereotype people according to color....
But wait... oh my.... so do I.

The hatred felt
The tension burnt
The pain is clear
They hate us

Why we cant be together
Whey we cant be equal
The pain is clear
They hate us

I want equality
They want nooses around my neck
The pain is clear
They hate us

The bullets flying past
I just want love
The pain is clear
They hate us

Now i am dying
There is not much moer i can do
I left my mark here for them to see
What they did to us today

The pain is clear
They hate us

Everyone, all different kinds, the way they act is so out of mind.
we all are the same, same goals and wishes,
just look out beyond you,all the schools of fishes.
Crowds and mobs of us,why can't we just have peace?
