My computer began giving me a message "click here to run an activex control on this webpage." Why? What can I do to make this go away? I cannot download some files and cannot see some videos. I know little about the workings of computer so speak to me in English please. Thanks.

There is certain active content built into websites that need certain software installed on your pc in order for you to get full use of that website. If its a website you trust, say www.microsoft.com you can choose to install the active x control without fear. However, if you just happened to wonder onto a site and don't really know what its about, I would not install it. Just click the x box to close the popup and do not install.

This is an issue due to a recent security path released by Microsoft for the IE browser. Please read this.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909738

Apparently, Microsoft is being sued by Eolas due to this ActiveX control issue embedding in the IE browser. For the meantime, if you know and trust the site, you can add this site on the Trusted Sites by going to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options. Go to Security tab and click "Trusted sites". Click the "Sites" button, type the URL of the site on the "Add this website to the zone" field and click Add. Click Close and then Ok. Again, do this only if you trust the site. If not, you will just have to wait whatever Microsoft does to the IE browser or you can always use Mozilla Firefox.

That's the security settings in your browser (IE) that is stopping active content (movies, javascript, etc.)
I don't and haven't used IE in a ong tim, but if you go to your Tools menu then look for Internet Options there should be a tab marked Advanced. Scroll through the list and you'll see a section called Security, put a check kmark in the "allow active content to run files on my computer"
You should be fine once you restart the browser.

ActiveX is something that Microsoft told Internet Explorer that it needs in order to make some multimedia work. If you get that message again, you can run the ActiveX control. It won't hurt anything.

This is a security setting that causes this pop-up.
Some pc users actually LIKE this feature
as it gives them the option to control unwanted downloads
that might happen on “suspicious” sites that could
download malware.

To UNDO this setting:
1.Open your browser > click TOOLS > Internet Options
2.select tab SECURITY > button CUSTOM
3.scroll down to ACTIVE X CONTROLS ….
4.select option ENABLE
5.click OK > when it asks “Are you sure” click OK

You need to click that and download Active X. Active X allows you to play multimedia files.
