Marriage is a religous relationship. The state only got involved for money matter but it boils down to religion. If you don't believe in the vows or the church you really don't have a reason to be married to begin with.
Yes we need marriage. How do you know if your in a happy marriage? Well, marriage isn't always going to be happy, marriage is a commitment to see each other through the good times and the bad....that would be the "for better or worse" part of the vows.
If you don't want to marry please stay single.

1) People marry because they've found the person they want to be with for the rest of their lives.
2) If I could get the additional bennies to care for a 'girlfriend' without being married, I might have gone that route. In my occupation, that's not an option. Thus the need for marriage.
3) If you have to ask if you're in a happy marriage, you're not. Trust me.

God intended men to be with women. Women are considered the help mates to men and fill in a psychological need-men are more logical thinkers(usually), women are more in touch with their feelings. The sexes compliment each other. The reason for marriage is to have a commitment to another person, to know they are committed to you and will not leave you(at least thats the intent of marriage, but with such high divorce rates the significance of that commitment is waning). Marriage keeps people safe from STDs because you only have sex with 1 person, 100% of the time assuming you are moral people. Also marriage protects you against financial liabilities. It also allows you to have children legitimately(bastard children are cursed for 10 generations by God, Old Testament)

It's a good question. For me, and people don't get ticked off for me saying it... but for me, I got married because I love my husband and can't imagine my life without him. I knew I wanted to have children with him, and I believe in having children when your married. I know that i'm in a happy marriage because we laugh everyday, and we can joke and kid with each other and know it's all in fun, we still look at each other the way we did 6 years ago.

you know you are in a happy marriage when you are glad to come home, not because it is home but for the people in the home, when you are happy to see your husband and you want to come home to him, thats when you know you have a happy marriage, when both of you feel that way

I feel that we marry because society forces us to live that way. Two people can love each other and have a family together without the paperwork. My feelings!
