I'm not sure which literary tradition you mean. Writing has been around as long as man, so sometimes what would be an understatement now may not have been then. Understatement is subject to the current interpretation. And the bible is full of these little "understatements." They make me laugh.

Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson making "The Girl is Mine". Most god-awful song from either artist. It'd be like two supermodels hooking up and 9 months later Rodney Dangerfield comes out. EDIT: OH! But that's not even the dumbest part! The dumbest part was that shortly before this abortion of a song, Paul McCartney told MJ that the best way to make money was to buy the rights to other people's songs. Michael Jackson then bought the rights to a huge portion of the Beatles' catalog. Hoisted by his own petard!
