I'd like to buy an inflatable mattress for a friend who will be going camping for a few days. But the air pumps are a bit expensive so is there a place that I can take it to get filled or can I even do it by mouth?

You can use a bicycle pump, you might also need an adapter, which can be found in most hardware stores.

First I'm going to assume that you mean one of the package kits that come with a collapsable base. Those often come with an electrical pump as part of the kit. If you're buying a kit that doesn't come with one you can buy a compressor that will run off of the 12 volt lighter plugs in cars at places like Canadian tire, or other hardware stores. I think mine cost me about $14 new. You can inflate them by mouth, but if they're any size you'll spend most of the night doing so, and end up with a heck of a headache. If you're looking at using it while camping where you don't have access to a car or anything then you can purchase foot pumps, or bicycle pumps.

Most places that sell inflatables also sell inexpensive plastic bellows type foot pumps. They are light weight and would be a lot better than trying to inflate it before leaving on a camping trip. Also the 12 volt inflators that are sold are not as expensive as the ones with rechargible batteries and would be a lot faster. They plug into your vehicles lighter outlet.

I have a manual pump that I use pure muscle to pump up my air matress. You can buy a manual pump at Wal Mart, and it only costs about 10 dollars. (check the camping section). If you do not have a Wal Mart where you live, then I don't know what else to tell you.

Good Luck.

You will need a lot of puff to do it with your mouth, I wouldn't even try. You can use a car foot pump with an adaptor or get a hand airbed pump, made by Intex.

You can blow it up by mouth. Better option: Stop at a gas station and use the tire inflator to do it.
