It is perfectly normal. I was 15 1/2 when I first got mine. Every girl is different. Periods last about 5-7 days (depending on your level of activity, hormones, diet, exercise...genetics...) and you'll probably have cramps the first couple of days, bleed heavily for days 2 & 3, then taper off until you are finished. Try the small, slender tampons and follow the directions in the box for inserting them. It does help to stand with one foot up on the toilet to get it inserted properly. Remember to change it every couple of hours... and you can wear a pad (the long, thin ones work best for overnight protection) with the tampon on your heavy days.

The hurting in your lower stomach is probably a combination of cramps (natural) and the size of the tampon. Change the size, invest in some Midol (it really works) or advil or other ibuprofen pain reliever.

Remember the 1st day of your period, then count about 28 days from THAT day to determine your next period. You may vary... some girls are 25 days, some are 31... and anywhere in between... you'll figure out your rythm as it progresses. So periods are actually about 21 days from the end of the last one to the beginning of the next one.

Be prepared to be an insommniac, bloated, sensitive (both to touch and to emotions) about 3-5 days before your period starts. I call it the week where all my "filters" are down... I don't tolerate "stupidity" or irriations during that week when most of the time I can blow it off, not when I am pre-menstral!! (PMS) It is no excuse to be a B**** but just be aware that you are crying at card commercials because it is THAT week (grin). The dang Budwieser horses get me every time....

Now... if you continue to experience pain that is so severe that it keeps you in bed, or if you are experiencing throwing up at the beginning of your period... you might ask your mom to take you to the doctor just to check things out. The nausea is natural...but if it is causing you to actually throw up, your hormones might be out of whack. My daughter went through that and her doctor put her on birth control pills just to regulate her period and help the hormones be better balanced. It didn't mean that I was allowing her to have sex!!! It just helped her not have such bad cramps or the vomiting.

When you are on your period, keep clean. It is okay to shower in the morning AND evening if you need to!!! And you'll hear that you should douche (internally cleansing) afterwards... don't. That only destroys the natural, healthy balance of your vagina... just remember to keep clean!!!

Wlcome to the world of womanhood... the benefits to having your period are that you will find yourself more creative, you'll have more energy the other 3 weeks of the month, you'll become more sensitive to the feelings of others allowing you to sympathize with them more and to care about them... and care for them!! Being a woman makes you an amazing friend... don't ever think of your period as a "curse..." It isn't! It is a blessing that allows us to do something men will NEVER do... and that is to bring life into this world!!!

Is it normal as in healthy? Absolutely, especially if you were particularly thin or athletic as a young teenager. You have to reach a certain percentage of body fat before your body will start the full puberty process.

Pads do tend to be messier than tampons, although you can improve the situation by getting ones with "wings" (that means they wrap around the sides of your underwear).

While you're first learning what to do, I recommend you pick a tampon with a plastic applicator. You need to slide the first half of the applicator all the way inside you and hold it in place while you push in the second half. The pain in your lower stomach is cramps. I've often found that cramps are exacerbated by tampons, probably because the tampon is pressing on your uterus. Believe it or not, cramps are just lactic acid buildup caused by the contractions in your uterus--just like when you lift weights at the gym and your muscles start to "burn".

The best solutions for cramps are 1) a heating pad against your lower back, 2) over-the-counter pain medication, especially Aleve or Advil, and 3) exercise. I've also heard that cutting down on salt the week before your period starts can help, but I've never had that confirmed by a doctor.

Now that you've gotten your period for the first time it's time to book an appointment with a gynecologist. They can answer all your questions in depth, and check to make sure that the delay in getting your period wasn't caused by anything bad (which it probably wasn't). Good luck!

There's nothing wrong with getting your first period at 16. People get it at all different ages - it depends a lot on body size and when puberty begins.
Before I started using tampons, I wore (and continue to wear as backup) an ultra-thin overnight pad w/wings. I like stayfree and always a lot - they've never let me down! They're good because they're really long, but they're thin, so it doesn't feel like a diaper and you can't see them through your pants.
Using tampons can be tricky at first. I didn't use them for the first few years. A tampon with a plastic applicator is the easiest to insert - Playtex gentle glide is my favorite brand. When inserting the tampon, be sure to hold it by the base. Usually you will have to insert it at an angle rather than straight up & down. Be sure to read the instructions for more details.
I know it's a big change but eventually you'll get used to it.

Try pads with wings... or longer pads with wings... it may take a few trial and errors to find one that you like best.

Yes, I had the same issue with tampons... you have to try and relax.... try a bit of baby oil....

I was 15, almost 16, when I started.

A period can last anywhere from 3 to 10 days, it all depends on you.

Feel free to email me with questions! I am 32 :) Good luck!

Ok stop freaking out you will be ok. try using an all night pad. the hurting after insering a tampon could just be cramps. try using a smaller tampon till you can get it in better. that helps with positioning. your period will only last a few days to a week. try taking some motrin to help with the cramps. and yes its normal for you to be 16 and just getting your period. good luck and welcome to hell. lol just kidding its really not that bad you will be a pro in no time

Yes, you can start at any age, I got mine when in was 10 1/2. There is nothing wrong with you, trust me. You can get your 1st period as early as 8 or as late as 18. Try pads with wings and longer ones...I had that problem too.

What's normal for one person isn't necessarily normal for another. You are lucky you started a little late. As for the bleeding you may want to see a doctor to find out the best way to cope with your heavy days. They can last from a low of three days to a high of ten. But,six is probably the norm. Hope you solve your problem.

NOT healthy Get to an gynecologist ASAP. If you don't menstruate often enough it can cause infertility later on, or it could be indicating a serious problem with something else. It is really important to make an appointment as soon as you can.
