I'm 24, not too active these days, normal weight. I eat healthy, but are there any supplements I should be taking to keep my body running at optimal health? Maybe give me some more energy?

Its realy important that you get enough calcium, you need to be taking about 1,000 mg a day; make sure that you take it over a period of time because your body can not absorb an entire 1,000 mg dose at once. Vitaman C is also important for your immune system. As far as engergy is concerned try taking Vitaman B-12 it will help boost your energy level but it is not a quick fix. The best way to increase your energy level is to keep moving, when you stay active and get enough sleep it will help.

keeping your body running at optimal health means you are able to fight off and prevent diseases from developing. it is important that you take vitamins but first and foremost you need to be sure your diet is good, you have enough amount of sleep, you're not smoking, you have consistent exercise. if not, it's not that easy to have optimal health. now for supplements, you can either choose to take natural or synthetic brands. natural brands basically are manufactured from natural sources (duh) - fruits and vegetables. synthetic brands are manufactured by using synthesized ingredients of these minerals - meaning these are chemically manufactured. what are the differences? the body is able to absorb natural brands easily because ingredients have complementary ingredients to help them be absorbed by the body. synthetics are not as easily absorbed. have you heared of people developing stones? these are usually people who've taken synthetics for years. these are brands that say they have 100% of this or that. a pure vitamin c (ascorbic acid) or calcium or vitamin E is such. what happens is that the body is able to absorb only a fraction of that 1000mg. what happens to the bulk of that? it either goes out of your body unprocessed (that's why sometimes when you urinate it's so yellowish) or it gets clinged to your kidney or gall bladder. that's why there are gall stones or kidney stones. there is another important part you must understand about supplements. nobody is strictly regulating them, even natural brands. you need to have a strong source of clinical studies. but this is another discussion. if you want me to explain this (because i also want others to voice their opinions here and this is geting pretty long) do email me at hear_seeker@yahoo.com
