I have a friend who does this all the time. All of my other friends said it was not right. It's really creepy and annoying!

If this is a friend, tell him/her to knock it off! Your not interested, if you were you would ask & until you do, don't start preaching or trying to teach me anything! You might go to the principal & report this person. They do have a right to speak about their religion but if no one listens, they will end up speaking to themselves! Walk away!

It would help if people would read the full question first.
PUBLIC schools can't teach/preach religion. You are not talking about the school doing so... it is your friend doing so. For the most part, schools don't attempt to regulate normal conversation among friends. (normal conversation not to include terrorism or boms, obviously).
NOTHING illegal in what your friend is doing. Commendable to stand up for her/his beliefts. Good way to lose friends, who are uncomfortable with it.
I really don't think it should take a teacher to intervene here. If this is a friend, hopefully you can kindly get the message across that you like them, but your views are different, and you'd rather not discuss the topic. If that does not work, change your seat at lunch, or whatever.
Other friends are overreacting to call it illegal.

Schools are funded by taxes and other government funding. If there were truly separation of church and state, then public schools are no place for teaching religion.
That should be in churches... which are tax exempt.
We have no choice but to pay taxes. The money only goes just so far... I'd much prefer to see it go towards academics, not theology.
People choose to go to church.
Let them learn their religion there.

As far as student preaching in the halls of school, etc... THAT is the wrong place. People are there from all different backgrounds and do not appreciate having other peoples personal choices crammed down their throats.

At a public school, yes. At least in some countries.

Public schools are publicly (government) funded, and if the law of the land requires that there is a separation of church and state, then your friend's actions could be construed as being against the law.

The most appropriate thing that the rest of your friends can do, other than talking with this one individual, is to talk, as a group, with the school principal.

If it is a public school and a teacher is teaching about religion in a generic way, such as teaching about the various religions in a History class and how they influenced history, that is OK. If it is outside of that, it gets iffy. If the teacher starts each class with a little sermon about why his faith is the one true faith, definitely not.

If it is a private school, they can do what they want.

You have to separate the two. It would technically be illegal to preach; it is not illegal to teach about a religion, especially in the context of history, which cannot be accurately viewed without showing the religious perspective.

Unless the school is a Church funded school, yes it is illegal. There is a little thing called "Separation Of Church and State". I don't want to ban Christianity, but I don't want it forced on my kids. Not all Americans are Christians, certain people will just have to get over it.

Creepy, yes. Illegal, not entirely. If its in a group and not during school hours, its ok. But, the school cant fund any aspect of it with the exception of providing a safe place for these wierdos to do it.

Its funny how some christians would scream their beliefs but look in disbelief if you whispered yours.

It's only illegal for the school to organize and promote such teaching (assuming you're referring to public school). It is not illegal for students to teach it or even organize meetings and prayer groups. "See you at the pole" would be an example of this where once a year students organize a morning prayer around the school flag pole. God put each of us on this earth for a purpose, to fulfill his wishes and to glorify himself through us. Perhaps your friend is supposed to be doing what he is doing, and perhaps you're to be listening and questioning. Hope this helps!

It's not illegal for a peer to talk about their religion since it is protected by the first admendment. However, it may be for a teacher.

The best thing you can do is tell him that despite the fact he may have a love for his religion, others may not have that same respect.
