The Art of War by Sun Tzu is one of the most influential books ever written, and is applicable beyond war as well; On War by Carl von Clausewitz is pretty definitive; these are real-world books on how to wage war, not histories or fictionalized stories; not sure what you're looking for

Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" A book everyone should read. Of course, there is also "The Prince" by Machiavelli, which covers all aspects of statecraft including war. I don't think our politicians have read either book.
