On Krypton, in the Golden Age and the original version of Superman, he was Kal-L son of Jor-L.

When he was revised for the Silver age, he was renamed Kal-El of the house of El. His father is Jor-El. He has an uncle (brother of Jor-El) named Zor-El. Superman also has a cousin from this Uncle named Kara (Supergirl in Silver Age, and Powergirl in the Golden Age (later retconned to be from the parallel Earth-2)).

The Silver age name has remained to date, and is the most common, but it was not the first name he was given. And, actually as of the last BIG Event at DC, the original Superman may still be around, so there still is a Kal-L.

I find it sad that the parents care so little for what the child will go through in it's formidable years- the teasing, and no one taking him seriously. I'd change my name as soon as I was old enough. Names are just that- names! They have no basis on who we are as people, which is why I dont understand the push toward "unique" names. I'd be the same person if my name was Katie or Heather or Julia. However, giving kids names that will invite teasing will just up the chances of him ending up on a clock tower with a shotgun.
