The idea started in the opium dens. You paid to sit and smoke, the host and his men would appear at intervals and bring you whatever you wish and in your altered state all you see is the puffs of smoke and a genie appearing offering you anything you desire.

Djins are real but they aren't what you think they are. They are malevolent beings and aren't out to help you. The "Wishmaster" movies are close to how they really are. Aladdin is pure garbage.
