i think kids join gangs today because they have no support or structure at their household and are usally very low income.
they think that they have nothing better to do that get high and beat the snot out of people. i go to school with people like this and i think it is horrible... it took my best frined 3 years ago. he was a straight A student of african decent when his father went to the iraq war. his father was killed and his mother couldent find a job leaving them in debt and with no money. his grades dramaticly dropped and he talked less and less to me. Around 3 months later he was found murderd in the back of a known drug selling home.

Kids do this today because they think that the people that they run with are their frineds but to find out the person who shot my frined was actually the young male who approached him in the first place to join the gang and get high with them.

This is JUST speculation. I'm NOT saying I'm right. Hell I'm probably wrong, but this is why I think they join.
1. The cops in their neighborhood don't bother going there because it's dangerous so they need protection.
2. The feeling of being part of something or a brotherhood
3. Some are idiots who want to look cool
4. That's the only thing they knew growing up because no ever taught them right or wrong.
5. Someone else tells them to join because they are accepted among the gang and people in it like him or her
6. They've always wanted to join
7. They've always wanted to be "hard"
8. Misconception - or basically, they don't really know what it is and they think they know or they are curious
9. They think they can get the "finer" things in life
Personally, I think gangs are stupid. F*ck that I'm going for dolo.

There is not only the pressure to fit in with a group, but also coercion not to refuse. Kids are often afraid not to go along or else they will be physically threatened, harassed or harmed. To protect themselves from worse harm, they may seek to align with bigger, tougher and more experienced gang members. Once they are in, it can be hard to leave for the same reason. They can't ask for help if they are afraid of getting beaten up for being a snitch, and if they afraid to get in trouble, that can be used against them as extortion to force them to do things they don't want. At the very worst, if they get hooked on drugs, they can lose all reason and be driven to crime to feed their addiction.

They want to belong and they think it's cool. And it's also who has beef with who.Like one group of boys vs. another group. They fight for territory, honor, respect, dignity , and rights. They even die for it.If you die for your gang then you die with honor. And if you chicken out and get scared and dessert the gang the you die painfully and are shamed and you body tossed aside. And if you walk out your door naked (no protection) best believe someone can tell and you better say some prayers. And if the gun ain't already ****** then you wastin time. They do it because one group makes it worse for another. You've got the Eastside(bloods),Southside (Krips) Westide (folks). And each one makes it worse for the other so it's like if one wasn't there things would be better for the other one. And they fight it out at all costs and nothing less to win. and around here that's all we've ever known, known knows who started, but it's got to keep goin.Tha's just the way of life here.

I believe that children join gangs for a since of belonging. There parents may not be around, so the gang become there family.

Because they have a lack of "family" feeling in their true family due to teenage pregnancy, absences of one or both parents or lack of love from either or both parents, so they make up what the are missing by joining a gang or "family" to feel that completeness and that security they are lacking with blood relatives.

It's for the same reason that most bikers join gangs. They like having their own filth around them and they can't do anything by themselves.

Belonging is the biggest reason of the past and of today I believe. People who don't believe they fit in anywhere else and are approached by gang leaders who seem to show them the prospect of belonging that they've not found anywhere else.
