Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys "build character" by spending all day, every day, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.

The Giver, by Louis Lowry.

The book focuses on a 12 year old boy. My son read this book (his choice) for a sixth grade assignment, wrote a report on it, and still talks about how much he loves the book.

From Amazon:

In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price.

My daughter is in second grade now but she really loved the Fancy Nancy books (I think they have chapters) and still enjoys all the Magic Treehouse books and Junie B. Jones books. My daughter loves science and nature so she has a few big books that are dictionary/children encyclopedia type but she can read them like chapters as well. I keep saying I'm going to go to the library and have a librarian help us out in finding new books to read because my daughter has read all of her books too. Good luck!

My favorite at that age was "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Former President Jimmy Carter said his favorite was "War and Peace."

Both of those are a bit difficult for the average sixth grader. You might want to check into "Treasure Island," "Little Women," "The Little House" series, "Anne of Green Gables," "The Hobbit," "Tales of Narnia" series, or "The Sword in the Stone."

I read the first book of Remembrance of Things Past when I was in the sixth grade, but I was a little advanced.

I don't recommend condescending to what you think is a sixth grade level. I'd suggest maybe Little Women or any other classic, really.

Depends... I am a reader so I recomend Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. It's a sad book, but good storyline.
