Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy outside of your uterus. It is usually in the fallopian tube (the tube between the ovary and the uterus), although they can be found in the abdominal cavity as well. They do not usually develop to term and can cause hemorrhage, since the baby is not developing in the correct location. So, most ectopic pregnancies are terminated with medications or surgery. I have linked a great web site with lots of information on the subject. I hope it helps.

An ectopic pregnancy is one in which the fertilized ovum is implanted in any tissue other than the uterine wall. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the Fallopian tube (so-called tubal pregnancies), but implantation can also occur in the cervix, ovaries, and abdomen.

It just means that fetus was not in the proper place. Instead of being in a mothers womb it simply did not reach it and start to develope outside the mothers womb.
