Fear is a beneficial emotion. It focuses attention on what needs to be done in order to avert disaster. Yet fear can also become generalized, and that is not a pleasant experience. When we are children - young children - we are free of fear. Then our parents start to hit us and tell us we can't do things. This is unfair and we begin to understand that we're not in control and that if we do certain things, we will be punished.

This is where fear begins. It just takes on a life of its own as we grow up.
