The basic answer is that by knowing about the past, we know what mistakes to avoid making in the future. Sometimes that theory doesn't work out so well (look up Lyndon Johnson, Vietnam; see George Bush, Iraq).
History tells us where we have been. And we ignore it at our peril.
The other thing is that history is inherently interesting -- the key word in history is STORY. History is about narrative, it is about people who lived in the past and did interesting things.
Wars, scandals, corruption, violence, murder, debauchery, human sacrifice -- you can make some cool movies there.

We study history so that we learn from our past actions; so that we learn what to do and what not to do. We learn history as an attempt to understand human development and human nature. We study history so that we can learn where we come from and how we came to be.
Examples:
1. The Revolutionary War.
This was how The United States became a country. This was a succesful struggle(war) to gain independance.
We learn history in order to develop a better, safer future.
1. WWII. This was obviously a very bad time for the world. We have learned that this should never happen again. From WWII, we also learned about the destructive nature of Human beings.
I hope this helps at least a little bit. Bye!!!

Huh? That's it. EZ: Ramble on about something. Go off topic a little. 20 sentences, huh? Even I could do that I'm freakin' failing Algebra! I'm a storywriter, I've gone past 60 pages in Microsoft Word on 12 sized font and single spaced. And that was all for pleasure! No lie.
Write fifteen sentences about how history is useful for the future, learn from our mistakes, look up to great men like Dr. King, know exactly what it is our founding fathers did, why it is people hate us so much (joke, don't put that one down), how it is we gained control of land, etc.

Here are some hopefully helpful sources on the topic. We had to write about the same question at the beginning of the year for US History, however it wasn't a grade and unfortunately I cannot remember what I wrote.

Hopefully these will give some inspiration/ideas. Good Luck!

As it is often said, history repeats itself. We study history to learn from our past mistakes and learn how to prevent them from happening again. (there's a start)

We study history to learn how to prevent future problems and to learn why things are the way they are.

IT is a good site that can help you.. don't copy it word for word, just use it for support and to give you ideas.
Hope that helped!
