It seems most restaurants are very dark with the exception of fast food joints such as McDonald's. I could never figure out what the reason for this is. If I had my choice, I'd have Xenon lighting in a restaurant. I like to actually see what it is that I'm eating.

Ambience. Many people will frequent restaurants with mediocre food and great ambience. Most of the time, when someone goes to McD's or any other fast food restaurant, they are going there to eat or kill time. They aren't celebrating a birthday or anniversary or Valentine's Day. They aren't there to pop the question or schmooze a client or seal a business deal. Fast food is just that ... fast food.

Think about how many people eat at your same table in just one day in a busy restaurant. Now think about how many times that floor gets cleaned, swept, or vacuumed in one day. Yes, the restaurant will tell you the dim lighting is for ambiance, but we know the truth. It's to cover dirt and hair and crumbs and half-eaten chunks of food. You think I may be exaggerating, but bring a flashlight with you on your next visit.

Dim lighting relaxes people, it makes food look better, and it makes people look better, so when you're eating great looking food with a great looking date and your waitress/waiter is hot, all the while feeling relaxed...you don't mind paying for your food and you'll probably tip more. Fast food joints don't worry so much about this because your only goal there is to fill your stomach...ambiance is not a concern. Plus, everyone knows McDonalds food is great no matter what it looks like, and, usually, despite what it looks like.

(1) for the romantic ambience
(2) to cover up the cleanliness of the restaurant
(3) to lessen the shock of the prices on the menu
(4) the less lighting watts used, the electrical bill for the owner is less

I htink the lights are rather dim because they don't want the customers to damage there eyes when they come out the door to the street. They also might not want to see all the food they eat or how expensive the food is.

To be honest with you I actually like it when the restaurants have very little lighting.

Because it's a known fact that low lighting is conducive to good digestion.
Even more conducive is adding low, soft pleasurable music and... the color red, (believe it or not?).
And, personally, I agree with these findings. I HATE bright lights, loud music and other noise pollution when I eat!

If it's a nice place, it's for ambience and atmosphere. If it looks dirty in the first place, they're hiding the dust and bugs and uncleanliness of the floor.
