They are very sturdy, I agree. They can go up to six months w/out eating. Penguins are awesome!

While all the animals listed so far are impressive, they have nothing on the Water Bear (Phylum Tardigrada).

Imagine an animal that has been found in just about every environment known to man, from the arctic tundra to blazing deserts, from mountain sanctuaries to hydrothermal vents. These tiny animals have the capacity to live anywhere on earth. They even possess the ability to drain all of the water from their body to hibernate INDEFINITELY (cryptobiosis). One water bear was found in a soil sample that was 150 years old. The soil contents were tested and then wetted ... the water bear woke up and resumed its normal life patterns.

That animal can withstand Sub-Zero temperatures and go without food for much longer than a few months.

I agree that emperors are tough. They do not go six months without eating, it is no more than three. The males and females travel to the rookery where mating occurs and the female lays the egg. The male then incubates it while the female returns to sea. The incubation period is 60days and the female returns within two days of the chick hatching. the male then returns to the sea to feed.

Male southern elephant seals go longer without eating. They haul ashore in August and claim territory. The females come ashore in September and October, giving birth and suckling the pup. Only after the pup is weaned and has moved out of the harem to safety above the beach is the female receptive to the male. Once mating has occurred, the female returns to the sea. The males stays with the harems until the last female has left around late November. Only then do the males return to the sea to feed - about four months after they come ashore.

I agree with your beliefs the that their fats stored in their body kept them warm also their flippers help them to keep warm also. unlike polar bear, fur and its have to hunt fish for survival.
