That's a big question, and one which I sense you don't totally sense the implications of, or you'd have a.) been more specific in the asking of it, and b.) used language correctly.

The technically correct answer is that rivalry didn't really build up between emperors in Rome, because there was only ever one emperor at a time - at least during the early Imperial period. What often happened was that one guy was emperor and favoured the people he favoured; a group of disaffected citizens, who weren't in favour, selected their own candidate, had the incumbent emperor assassinated, and put their own guy on the throne. It was the desire for power, plain and simple.

Why did the Roman empire collapse? Because the Goths had better motivational speakers.

This might not help but there were several factors to the collaspe of the roman empire. Historians still debate this today, If my knowledge is right i believe that there were two emperors when the roman empire split (don't take my word for it) Constantine whom ruled the east and justinian who ruled the west and their rivalry split the empire. Also there was a huge gap between the rich and the poor that was a big part as well and finally the germanic nomads stormed rome and brought the empire to its knees.

First off if you are talking about Rome before it split into the western roman empire and the eastern roman empire, Rome was ruled by one emperor, if your talking about the period after the empire split in two, then they was a rivalry to show which emperor could make his empire better then the other one. But this didn't cause the fall of Rome. The fall of Rome was caused by the huge number of nomadic invaders coming to Rome from the steeps of Asia.
