Memorize this equation: Number of Neutrons = Atomic Mass - Atomic Number
Use a periodic table to find atomic number.
Locate your element, for example, osmium, on the periodic table.
Look in the upper left hand corner to find the atomic number. (For osmium, you will see a 76)
Determine atomic mass by looking underneath the chemical name to find the atomic weight. In our example, we find an atomic weight of 190.23 for osmium.
Round off the atomic weight to the nearest integer to find the atomic mass. In our example, 190.23 is rounded to 190, resulting in an atomic mass of 190 for osmium.
Subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. This gives you the number of neutrons in your atom. 190 - 76 = 114 neutrons.

There are as many neutrons in an atom as it takes to make up the element's mass number, which is basically the sum of the protons (atomic number) and neutrons in each atom. The mass number is actually the atomic weight of the element, rounded up to the nearest whole number.
For example, krypton has an atomic number of 36, meaning that it has 36 protons. Since the mass number is 84 (rounded up from the atomic weight of 83.90), the total number of neutrons would be 84 - 36 or 48 neutrons total.
As long as you have the atomic number and mass number, you just subtract the atomic number from the mass number rounded up to the nearest whole number, and that's how many neutrons you'll have!

An atom of what? There are none in a hydrogen atom. Uranium has multiple isotopes, each of which have different numbers of neutrons, but Uranium-235 has 143 neutrons.
